What Is A/B Testing and Why You Should Start Today

A simple guide to A/B testing and how to use it in Landopa to boost your campaign conversion rates.

You are running ads and your landing page conversion rate is 2%. The natural question: how do you increase that number? Change the headline? Swap the CTA button color? Shorten the form? Every change is a hypothesis — and A/B testing is the only way to prove which hypothesis is correct.

What Is A/B Testing — The Simplest Explanation

A/B testing (also known as split testing) is the practice of running two versions of the same page simultaneously, dividing traffic randomly between them, and measuring which version achieves a higher conversion rate.

  • Version A (Control): your original, unchanged page.
  • Version B (Variant): the page with the single modification you want to test.
  • 50% of traffic goes to A, 50% to B — completely randomized.
  • Once enough data is gathered, compare the conversion rates and pick the winner.

The golden rule: only change ONE element per test. If you change both the headline and the button color at the same time, you won't know which change made the difference.

Why Can't You Just "Guess" Which Is Better?

Humans are great at rationalizing stories — but terrible at predicting other people's behaviors. Here are some real-world examples:

  • Obama's 2008 campaign: a "Sign Up" button converted 40% better than "Learn More" — contrary to what many experts predicted.
  • Microsoft Bing: a small change in how ad headlines were displayed boosted revenue by 12% — equivalent to hundreds of millions of dollars.
  • A course landing page: a photo of an instructor looking at the form converted better than one looking at the camera — despite everyone's intuition suggesting the opposite.

Intuition and experience are great starting points for forming hypotheses. But only data can confirm whether those hypotheses are right or wrong.

Which Elements Should You Test First?

Not all elements are equally worth testing. Prioritize by potential impact:

  • Main Headline (Hero headline): affects every visitor, yielding the highest impact.
  • CTA button: text, color, position — small changes, clear impact.
  • Form: number of fields, field order, placeholder text.
  • Hero image or video: real person vs. illustration, video vs. static image.
  • Overall layout: single-column vs. two-column, form on top vs. form at the bottom.

Where to start?

Test the main headline first. It is the highest-impact and easiest-to-change element. Once you find the winning headline, move on to test the CTA. Continue down the list based on visibility.

How Much Traffic Do You Need Before Drawing Conclusions?

This is a question many people overlook, leading to incorrect conclusions. Ending a test too early is one of the most common mistakes.

  • With a baseline conversion rate of ~2%, you need a minimum of 1,000 visitors per version to get reliable results.
  • With higher conversion rates (~5%), you can conclude sooner — around 500 visitors per version.
  • Run the test for at least one full week to avoid weekday bias (user behavior on Monday differs from Saturday).
  • Statistical significance should reach 95% before declaring a winner — Landopa calculates this for you automatically.

If you only get 100 visitors per day, be patient and wait 2-3 weeks. Drawing conclusions from 200 visitors is like catching fish with your hands in the ocean — you might get lucky, but it's not a reliable system.

How to Enable A/B Testing in Landopa

  • Open your landing page in the Builder.
  • Select the "A/B Test" tab on the left sidebar.
  • Click "Create Variant" and give it a name describing your hypothesis (e.g., "Headline emphasizing price").
  • Edit the variant with the change you want to test — leave the rest unchanged.
  • Click "Start Test" — the system automatically splits traffic 50/50.
  • Monitor the results in Analytics → A/B test comparison.
  • When you have a winner: click "Select Winner" to make the winning variant your main page.

Pro Feature

A/B testing is available in the Pro and Agency plans. The Pro plan lets you create unlimited variants and view detailed comparison reports with conversion lift and statistical significance. You can try Pro free for 14 days.

In Summary

A/B testing is not just for tech experts or data scientists. It is a habit of great marketers — those who understand that every hypothesis needs to be validated, and that every test is an opportunity to learn about their customers.

Start small: one page, one element, one hypothesis. After a few weeks, you will have real data — and better decisions for all your subsequent campaigns.
